Stop further discrimination - Strengthen the DDA - Disability Discrimination Act (1992) Australia

Goal : 247 / 5000

To the Federal Attorney General
We demand that the DDA be strengthened to prevent further discriminatory practices by public transport providers, namely Jetstar Airlines in the recent Federal Court finding (13/1/12) in favour of Jetstar vs Sheila King.

People with disabilities in Australia for too long now have been at the mercy of businesses and corporations in their goals of money making. People with disabilities are the victims of their discriminatory practices, and we believe this must stop.

In a country such as Australia, we pride ourselves on having a go, of making our way in the world, and of being independent. People with disabilities are no different and desire to be included in all facets of community. This cannot be done successfully whilst discrimination continues to occur according to the policies of Jetstar and other transport providers in Australia.

We demand that this issue be rectified, by strengthening the DDA.

In 2007 my brother-inlaw decided to fly my wife and myself to Newcastle to spend Xmas with him and organised tickets with Jetstar. Beside the long wait to board the plane, wheelchair dependent so first on, and the forklift to get off the other end the trip was straight forward. The return trip started with a longer wait to board the plane and a long wait to disembark , last off, by which time I need a loo break. I was left alone in a vacated lounge sitting on a narrow airline wheelchair while my wife went to collect my chair to offer some comfort to the designated toilet. The wait for her to return was uncomfortable as she had to collect each piece of the wheelchair as it came out of the baggage coveyer and assemble the entire chair before she could attend to me. It seems the baggage handlers thought it would fit in the hold better. My wife would not let me speak to the manager in such a rage and did not want to make an embaressment for her brother who had paid for our trip. She assured me that she had spoken her complaint firmly but I'm sure it was nothing like I would have said. I vowed from that day on I will never put my life in the hands of those arrogant bastards again. I have flown since then twice to Brisbane, Melbourne and Narita via Kula Lumpa and never been treated so badly like I was by JETSTAR.

I support this petition and I personally believe there is a lot of hidden discrimination in employing people with disability in Australia.
